Appreciate sunlight

The International VELUX Award 2008 (IVA 2008) is open for registration. The Award encourages students of architecture worldwide to give their personal interpretations of the overall theme “Light of tomorrow”. If you wish to participate in IVA 2008 you must register before 8 March 2008.

When the International VELUX Award took place in 2006, more than 2,000 students from 92 countries registered to submit their personal interpretations of the theme “Light of tomorrow”. We hope that even more students will join the Award this time to explore the theme of sunlight and daylight and to contribute to a deeper understanding of this ever-relevant source of light and energy.

We welcome a diversity of interpretations; in fact we challenge students worldwide to seek the boundaries of daylight in architecture, including aspects of for instance aesthetics, functionality, and sustainability. All entries will be evaluated by a jury consisting of recognized architects who represent different perspectives on architecture and daylight as well as different geographies.

Maciek Grelewicz from Poland won honourable mention in IVA 2006 for his project “Sunfinder”. Exploring the IVA theme “Light of Tomorrow” Maciek’s fundamental idea was to create a piece of mobile architecture sensitive to the correlation between humans and sunlight. The piece should be organic in the sense that when moved it would react like a real organism. Maciek describes how participation in the Award has effected his work with daylight and architecture in this way:

“Participation in the International VELUX Award helped me value the importance of daylight in architecture. Now, daylight plays a more important role in my designs. I understood that sufficient access of daylight is more important than formal aspects of architecture.”

To be able to submit your project for IVA 2008 you need to register before 8 March 2008. You can register as an individual or as a team of students as long as you are students during the study year 2007/2008. When you register you need to be backed and granted submission by a teacher from a school of architecture.

You will find more specific information about the conditions of the Award in the Award brief.
