Daylight is crucial

“The International VELUX Award has given me a great interest in pursuing daylight in every aspect of design. I am interested in doing studies on how daylight can influence the quality of space in which a person lives, works, or plays”, says Christa Scott who won honourable mention in 2006.

Christa Scott who won honourable mention in IVA 2006 is currently finishing her master’s degree at the University of South Florida School of Architecture and Community Design. Besides that, she is working part time at the international firm HKR Architects, which just opened an office in Florida.

What did the Award mean to your studies and your career?
First, it has given me a great interest in pursuing daylight in every aspect of design. I am interested in doing studies on how daylight can influence the quality of space in which a person lives, works, or plays. The award allowed me to gain recognition for Creative Student of the Month at my university.  Furthermore, my current employer sought me out for employment after hearing of my honourable mention. In general, the award has broadened my horizons and allowed me to reach out to people that I met at the award event. For example, our school of architecture was fortunate enough to have Kengo Kuma, who was one of the jury members, as a guest speaker last spring. I was able to talk with him again and get to know him a little better.

How did the Award impact your way of working in general and in connection with daylight in particular?
The way in which I work is one of great diligence and thoughtfulness. After the experience of the International VELUX Award, I realize that there is always a purpose in what you do even if you do not realize it at the time. You never know who may benefit from your experiments and discoveries. I have always felt daylight was a crucial material to incorporate into every design. However, now that I have been exposed to many different approaches to using daylight, it has enriched my design greatly. I consider it as another design tool just as I do a wall, floor or ceiling.

Would you recommend the Award to other students?
Absolutely, yes. It was a first class experience.  Every detail in planning for the ceremony was thought of. Also, the networking and connections that are made with people from all over the world is priceless.
It seems that VELUX is a company that strives to make a difference in the world and not just make money.  My parents have recently purchased a home and noticed they had VELUX products put in their home. They were able to relate to the company personally and that is great marketing.

I am very proud to say I was part of the award.  People love to hear of my experience and I love to share all the wonderful opportunities I received, such as travel, meeting people, and learning about daylight and architecture. Bilbao is a city that everyone should have the opportunity to experience.  It was my parents’ first trip to Europe so it allowed them to have a new and wonderful experience as well.
