Matthias Sauerbruch, Germany

 

Matthias Sauerbruch is a partner in the architectural practice that he founded in London together with Louisa Hutton in 1989. Today, “Sauerbruch Hutton Architects” has offices in Berlin, Germany, and London, England. Sauerbruch Hutton’s projects have received many national and international honours, and the work of the partnership has been the subject of various exhibitions and monographs.

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

As a result, Sauerbruch and Hutton were awarded the Erich-Schelling-Prize for Architecture in 1998, and they received the Fritz-Schumacher Prize for Architecture in 2003.

 

The work of the partnership between Sauerbruch and Hutton has become known for its serious engagement with issues of sustainability, focusing on the use of resources, both natural and urban. The architectural work of Sauerbruch and Hutton engages a rich interaction of design invention, environmental responsibility and material investigation. With its focus on low-energy building, the international firm has designed commercial and private spaces, led conservation projects and created urban design plans. Among the firm’s highly regarded building projects are GSW Headquarters in Berlin and the German Federal Environmental Agency Headquarters in Dessau.

 

Furthermore, Matthias Sauerbruch was a professor at the Technical University in Berlin from 1995 to 2001. Since 2001 he has held a chair at “Staatliche Akademie der Bildenden Kunste” in Stuttgart.  He has lectured at many national and international universities and he shared the Kenzo Tange Visiting Design Critic position at Harvard Design School in 2005 and the Harry S. Shure Visiting Professorship at the University of Virginia, School of Architecture in 2006-2007 with Louisa Hutton.

 

Matthias Sauerbruch’s own academic background was established in Berlin and London at “Hochschule der Künste” and the Architectural Association, where he received his master’s degree in 1990.
