Global Winners Announced!

The International VELUX Award is a biennial competition for students of architecture. We challenge students from all over the world to work with daylight as an ever relevant source of light, life and joy.

A quenchless light. Augmented market. Concept of the self-sustaining shopping plaza

Regional Winner Eastern Europe and the Middle East - Daylight Investigations

In this project, alternative natural light sources from various ecosystems are introduced for a self-sustaining megastructure containing a shopping plaza. New inhabitants, such as self-glowing bacteria, plants and fish, appear in the form of complex surfaces, reflecting skins and spreading medium. The active light elements go beyond mere biological mimicry and the building is considered as a lighting behavioural ecosystem.  The jury was intrigued by the idea and the amazing cartoon-like presentation. It has a truly conceptual and artistic approach to a sustainable future, discussing how we can erase the gap between consumption and production (how we use energy) and how entertainment can be taken to a completely new dimension. This project is a true example of “out of the box” thinking and, quite literally, considers the “light of tomorrow”.
