General questions
When will the next Award take place?
The next International VELUX Award will take place in 2014. Registration for International VELUX Award 2014 opens in October 2013.
What does it mean that the Award is open for "students of architecture"?
The award is open to students of architecture all over the world. The only requirement is that every student or team of students has to be backed by a teacher at a school of architecture. The team may include other students like engineers or designers.
Can winners of previous Awards participate in the next Award?
Yes, if they otherwise comply with the Award rules.
When is it possible to register for the 2014 Award?
Registration for the International VELUX Award 2014 opens in October 2013. You will find further information about registration for 2014 in due time on this site or at the

When is the deadline for submission for the 2012 Award?
The timeline for the next Award has not been decided yet, but it is likely that submission deadline for IVA 2014 will be in May 2014.
Are the projects anonymous?
Yes, all projects are anonymous until the announcement of the winners at the Award event. No names of entrants, teachers, schools or countries must appear on any part of the submitted material.
In which formats may projects be submitted?
All projects must be uploaded in a specific digital format. All details will be available when registration for IVA 2014 opens in October 2013.
Do we have to use VELUX products in the project submitted for the Award?
No, the Award is in no way restricted to the use of VELUX products. On the contrary, the Award seeks to challenge the future of daylight in the built environment with an open-minded and experimental approach.
What are the prizes?
The total prize money is 30,000 €. Number of prizes and honourable mentions will be decided by the jury. All winners will receive an Award trophy and will be invited to the Award event.
How many students participate in the International VELUX Award?
Since the first Award in 2004, the total number of entries has grown steadily. In 2012, 3,262 students representing 79 different countries registered. The total number of entries received for the 2012 Award was 986.
Who is the jury?
The jury is comprised of internationally renowned architects and building professionals representing different perspectives on architecture and different geographies.
How is the evaluation process?
The jury will look through all entries. A number of entries will be shortlisted for final discussion and evaluation before the jury decides on the winners. The international VELUX Award is planned and executed in close cooperation with and according to the rules of UIA.
How are the winners announced?
The winners will be announced and celebrated at an Award event. The prize winners and one team member from the honourable mentions and the special prizes will be invited to the event where prizes and trophies are presented.
Does VELUX plan to realize one or more of the project ideas?
VELUX has no stake in the concrete projects or their realisation. Therefore, all ideas are presented at the web exhibition for everybody to consult and enjoy, together forming a joint pool of knowledge and ideas for the light of tomorrow.
How does VELUX benefit from the Award?
Since VELUX was founded in 1941 the company always had a wish to facilitate the debate on natural daylight and fresh air. VELUX is an international company with activities in more than 40 countries around the world, and we want to support the dialogue on daylight everywhere to secure the relevance of our products. We want to strengthen our cooperation with the young architects of tomorrow and with building professionals in general. We also want to strengthen the role of daylight in architecture to promote architecture that focuses on peoples’ living conditions and sustainable development in line with the VELUX brand philosophy.
